Artist's Comments

This weekend I went with *xdragonflyx and a couple other friends to Cow Camp. It was my first true camping experience, and I got to see my first rodeo ever. :) I couldn't get any good pictures because it was done at night, and the lights were only good enough to see by eye.. not by camera. :( Oh well, I still had fun watching it.

I was captivated by the massive, drooling, angry bulls and the brave and stupid men who rode them. The bulls would keep bucking after the riders fell off, and that was when you could really look at them(without the riders and their chaps in the way)... the steam and dust rolling off their huge muscled backs, the drool dripping from their mouths, outlined by the dim arena lights... I couldn't get the image out of my head, and it begged to be painted.

Cow Camp was a blast, the horses, the camping, the rodeo, all of it... I can't wait to go next year if I'm invited.

It's a beautiful piece. Wonderful lighting and amazing anatomy. But I'm sorry, I think rodeos are sick. Agitating an animal until they are in a blind rage? Not my thing.
Sorry, wonderful painting, nonetheless.

Why? [link] That's why.

Bulls do the blind rage thing all by themselves... its not as cruel as you think... I think that most rodeo animals don't have a very bad life. They eat and sleep most of their lives away, then "work" for 8 seconds a night... if you call tossing around and jarring the crap out of a stupid human on your back work. To each his own though.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

Beautiful lighting, Lovely colors, and nice highlights. I like the combination of subdued colors and the action of the bull - put together it's very elegant.

actually, they can induce the anger in non cruel ways as well. i assume they used some sort of saddle for the men to sit on, and if you notice they usual strap them on to the animals just behind the forelegs, and sometimes the back. this is uncomfortable so the animal (they do this to the bucking broncos as well) will try and throw the saddle off. if you want, try it with your cat. i heard it works similarly if you tie a string on them in those areas. it's supposed to be funny as all hell (i wouldn't know cuz i've never had a cat... i'm not a fan of them *ew*)

Life was so simple when we believed dreams could come true.
:iconxdragonflyx:
Behind the forelegs and on the back is exactly where a horse saddle sits on a horse, though, so it shouldn't be as uncomfortable and unnatural as you imply otherwise every horse would try to buck it's rider off. Regardless, the bulls didn't have any saddle on, but instead something called a flank strap. I looked closely at it, and it's pretty much just a strap padded with sheepskin that ties around the flank (just in front of the hind legs). Maybe this is what you're thinking of? They use this on the broncos, too, and its positioning is meant to encourage bucking with their hind legs. It shouldn't cause any pain, though, just enough discomfort for the animal to try and dislodge it.

Most cats will struggle if you put a collar on them and they aren't used to it yet, too, but that doesn't mean they're in pain, so that example isn't the best.

Rodeos can be iffy when it comes to the well-being of the animals, I have to agree. Some do a wonderful job at keeping the animals safe (one cowboy at the rodeo even knowingly sacrificed points to make the experience less stressful for the calf in calf roping), but I'm sure there are still others in existence that use less-than-desirable methods.
