This is my first thin oil study for my Illustration course. The techinque is to use thinned out oil paints in many layers, almost like watercolor... but not.

This is just lovely. Especially the highlights on the body. One of my art teachers use to tell me to think like I was the light and what would I touch. Cracked me up each time they said that but the idea seemed to work for some people.
Since you are experimenting with thin layers of oil paint as if they were sort of water color (I know there is a difference.) You might experiment with laying down a color that is opposite to the one you intend on having there. Like if you were having a red hued horse you would put green in the shadows. It's something one of my teachers started me on and I love it even though it takes forever to get done. The technique seems to give each image a little more depth. Then again this is just a suggestion. Things I play with. My dad has given up on guessing what color I am making things because he says that everything I start otu doing looks psychedelic at first.
