I'm sure you have all heard about that new contest that is going on. The one where you not only win one hell of a sweet package, but also a brand new Intuos 4 tablet. I wish I could enter, but I haven't the slightest hope of even winning anything because of their voting criteria. This rant is not just for my sake, but also for those who are of lower popularized standing in this "community".

Whoever came up with the idea of using favorites as a voting format is a lazy ass moron.

The most favorited piece won't be "community favorite" by a long shot. It will be the "who-had-the-largest-fanbase-BEFORE-this-contest-went-down" favorite. If an artist who enters has a huge fanbase to start with, they will automatically get thousands of favorites from fans, with no regard to the contest that the image is for. But if a rather undiscovered talented artist produces a brilliant piece, since they haven't accumulated a massive following, they will only get as many favs as they can recruit. That artist who may be equally if not better than the more popular artist will have no chance of accumulating the amount of votes necessary to compete with the "popular" artists.

Also I have noticed in several of the more popular entries that they are just recategorized images that the artist did previously. Those images weren't made for the contest to being with, and they started out with a lead because of all the favs that image had already accumulated. Even though the rules don't state the piece had to be newly created just for the contest, I would think that would be a given...or at least repost it!

It really pisses me off that these big contests are basically rigged so that popular artists can throw a half-assed work into the frey and walk away with the prize where as other artists throw themselves into their piece, would give their left arm for such an awesome prize pack, and end up shafted. Granted those popular artists didn't get popular for nothing, and their half-assed art is better than a majority of the work submitted to such contests. But the judging system should be separate of the faving system, to ensure that the images are truly community favorites, and that even the smaller but equally talented have a chance at such riches.

Yeah sure, making they voting a separate system would mean man hours to sort out the riff-raff, and to post all the images up for vote by the community, but it would ensure a truly fair and artist friendly contest. Instead of tossing a prized Intuos 4 tablet plus goodies into an art community and watching us all fight over it like lions over a gazelle, couldn't they actually set up a civil and educated system that allows equal ground to all????
