Some of you know that I have pet rats... and if you didn't... P.S. I love ratties. And I adore my two female rats. You could call me a rat fan, lol. But back in February, within about a weeks time, I suddenly became very allergic to them. There was no change in bedding, food, or in their hormones since they are mature and middle aged. I sneeze a lot when I share space with them and their cage... which is always since they must be kept indoors, and when I handle them I break out in hives wherever they have come into contact with my skin.

Since Feb I have dealt with the allergy hoping it would go away, and even if it didn't, I loved my girls too much to consider giving them up. But last weekend when I moved my girls back home with an early move out load, my mother got to see my reaction. She said I needed to get rid of them before I did permanent damage to my skin or respiratory system. :( Giving them away is like giving away a child... it is tearing me up inside... Please, if you know anyway to remedy this allergy so that I can keep my girls, please tell me! I don't want to give them up. :(

You shouldnt really be asking advice when it comes to your health, go see a doctor, s/he might be able to help you and it might not be as bad =)
:iconchrisabell:
It's a dander, or dustmite within their fur. There is this stuff called: no water wash or something. My hubby had an allergy to cats until I started using that on them. You spray the animal, rub them down and dry them, I know it's safe for rodents because I used to have one for a long period of time until he passed away. Try that, it may help. Also, you can try benedril for allerfy relief. You have to remember that the season effect the animals aswell and they may have changed due to weather. I don't think it's serious as of yet, but you might want to think about switching their bedding to a hypoalgic bedding and hold them with a warm damp rag until they allergy fades. =) No worries. The immunity system works in mysterious ways and it may just be a fluke.

Shh.. Im trying to think, But nothing is happening.. O_o

I'm allergic to most animals (Including rats) and I take antihistamines which help a lot. Hayfever medicine essentially. They let me ride and stop me from flaring up if I go to friend's houses with pets.
:iconen-ni:
try going to the doc's to get some antihistamines. an ex of mine was severely allergic to cats, but since his parents refused to get rid of their three cats, he was on a pretty rigorous course of meds. it didn't get rid of the allergy, but made it so it was more easily dealt with. worse he suffered were days that he had sneezing/coughing fits, but i suspect that's because he didn't take every dose like he was supposed to.

I do vet science and one of my friends in the course is deathly allergic to dogs and cats (go figure). He has injections pretty frequently but once they're over he'll apparently be immune for 20 years (:

Don't know if it's the same for rats, but you should go ask your doctor and see what's available. Even if he just gives you antihistamine-somethings!

You can always try over the counter allergy medication, but if you really want to protect your health, talk to a doctor. There is probably something that could be done to allow you to keep your girls, but that's a decision to be made between you and your doctor. I have a dog who has pretty severe food allergies (her environmental aren't too terrible most of the year) and she cannot have beef or dairy at all.

I hope you don't have to find homes for your girls, but don't let your health take a back seat. The best of luck to you!

My sister is allergic to practically everything in the outback here in Australia... and she's a jillaroo/drover girl (go figure). She's allergic to all types of grass, hay, dander and most bugs! So she takes alot of allergic medication. Unfortunately for her, if she doesn't take her meds, her face puffs up and her nose and eyes stream. It makes her very self-conscious. And it makes finding a job even harder for her.

I also seem to be allergic to a few things too, same with my brother, mother and most of my friends. My Dad seems to be the lucky one he's only allergic to penicillin and tomatoes.

The percentage of allergies in people have gone up through the years and it's noticable nowadays.

Luckily you only seem to be allergic to rats... alas the down side is that they are your girls. I suggest you see a doctor, ask them to do an allergy test to check out if you are allergic to anything else. Then ask them whether they can help. Tell them every detail when they ask what happens when you touch your rats... and when you are around them. they really need to know. You might have to see a dermatoligist or allergy specialist, it is worth the pain of figuring out what you are allergic to. Plus, they can help you so much fast when they know what they are looking for.

I hope its just a case of medication, or you are allergic to a plant that is near your rats, or pollen that has flown through the window... that could always happen *hehe optimism*.

GET BETTER SOON!

I avoid doctors at all costs. They are nothing but a bunch of pill pushers. Normal people are more likely to know natural alternatives. :)

Where would I get that spray at?? A pet store or just at regular store?

The bedding I use doesn't effect me at all, I can clean out their dirty cage every week and barely have a reaction, it seems to be only when I handle them directly. I've tried benedril, but I still get all itchy.

I really hope my immune system switches back to the way it was. I wasn't allergic to anything before(except latex bandages)... now who knows what I could be allergic to. :(
